Liggett was among the eight women nominated in the Business Woman of the Year category during the 2015 Women in Business awards. Winners were also selected in the “Emerging Business Woman of the Year” and “Professional Excellence” categories.
The Tribune cited Liggett’s career in public accounting and her years of community service as reasons for bestowing the award. Liggett joined WK in 1973 and became WK’s first female partner in 1976. She works with clients in a variety of industries and provides tax planning, business consulting, and employee benefit plan services.
Liggett says George Keepers, who hired and mentored her, encouraged her to always give back to the community that gives so much to us. Following that advice, Mariel has served on boards of organizations including the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri, the Missouri Innovation Center, Great Circle, and True North. She has also been active in the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, and the Chamber’s Women’s Network.
Photos of the Women in Business event and profiles of Liggett and the other nominees are available on the Tribune’s website.
“Congratulations, Mariel,” said WK Chairman Jeff Echelmeier, “this is a well-deserved award.”
